Light Fixture Installation in Evansville, IN

A light fixture swap is one of the fastest ways to make a room feel new, and in Evansville there's no shortage of fixtures ready for retirement. Brass chandeliers and boob lights from the 1980s and 1990s fill the ranches and two-stories across the east and north sides. Older homes near downtown sometimes still have porcelain keyless sockets in basements and closets, or a single dim ceiling light in rooms that badly need more. Exterior fixtures take a beating from humid summers and freezing winters, and their sockets and gaskets give out. Many newer homes came with basic builder-grade lights that owners have been meaning to replace since move-in day.

We install ceiling lights, flush mounts, chandeliers, pendants over kitchen islands, vanity lights, sconces, under-cabinet lights, porch and garage lights, and motion and dusk-to-dawn fixtures. Our licensed electricians take care of the wiring, from connecting a new fixture to the existing circuit to adding dimmers, three-way switches and smart switches. We check that each box is properly mounted and rated for the fixture's weight, and add support for heavy chandeliers. Every new fixture is mounted level, sealed where it meets an exterior wall, and tested before we leave. We take away the old fixtures and the packaging.

What this covers

  • Ceiling lights, flush mounts and semi-flush fixtures
  • Chandeliers and pendant lights
  • Bathroom vanity lights and sconces
  • Porch, garage and exterior fixtures
  • Motion sensor and dusk-to-dawn lights
  • Dimmers, three-way and smart switches
  • Under-cabinet and closet lighting
  • Box inspection and support for heavy fixtures
  • Old fixture removal and cleanup
A note from around here: Dated brass fixtures in the 1980s and 1990s homes of the east side and Newburgh, bare-bulb basement lights in older West Side and Jacobsville houses, and weather-worn porch lights all over town make up much of our lighting work.

How a light fixture installation visit usually goes

Check the Box and Circuit

We turn off and verify the power, then check the box, the wiring condition and whether it can support the new fixture.

Prepare and Support

We remove the old fixture, upgrade or brace the box if needed, and install the new mounting bracket.

Assemble and Connect

We assemble the fixture, make clean, secure connections and mount it level and snug to the ceiling or wall.

Test and Clean Up

We restore power, test the fixture, dimmers and switches, seal exterior fixtures, and haul away the old ones.

Older homes need some extra attention. In houses from before the 1960s around Riverside, Bayard Park and the West Side, ceiling boxes are sometimes shallow, attached only to lath, or crowded with old cloth-covered wiring that has become brittle from decades of heat from incandescent bulbs. When we find that, we show you what's there and repair or replace the box and connection before hanging the new fixture, because a new light on a tired connection is a short-lived improvement. Outside, we make sure exterior fixtures are sealed against the siding or brick so summer storms don't drive water into the box, and we can add photocells or motion sensors so porch and garage lights handle themselves.

What shapes the price in Evansville

Light fixture installation cost depends on the fixture and the location. Swapping a basic flush mount on a sound box is quick. Chandeliers, multi-light pendants and fixtures with lots of glass or crystal take longer to assemble and hang, and high ceilings or stairwells need taller ladders. Upgrading or bracing a box adds time and material, as do dimmers, smart switches and three-way setups. Exterior fixtures may need sealing work or a new mounting block on siding or brick. Adding a fixture where none exists, which requires running new wiring, is a larger job. Replacing several fixtures in one visit keeps the cost per fixture down.

Neighbors often ask

Can you replace a light fixture with a heavier chandelier?

Yes. Heavier fixtures need a box rated for the weight and solidly attached to the framing. We check the existing box, and if it isn't up to the job, we install a properly supported one. Then we assemble the chandelier, set the chain or rod to the right height for the room, and connect and test it. Over a dining table, the bottom of the fixture usually looks best about thirty inches above the tabletop.

Can you add a dimmer or smart switch?

Yes. We install standard dimmers, three-way and four-way dimmers, and smart switches and dimmers that work with phone apps and voice assistants. We'll check that your fixtures and bulbs are dimmable, since mismatched LED bulbs and dimmers are the usual cause of flickering and buzzing. Many smart switches need a neutral wire in the box, which some older homes don't have, so we check that first and recommend a switch that will work.

Why do my new LED bulbs flicker?

Flickering is usually a compatibility issue between LED bulbs and an older dimmer designed for incandescent bulbs. Sometimes it's a loose connection in the fixture or switch. We check the connections, and if the dimmer is the problem, we replace it with one rated for LED loads and match it to dimmable bulbs. That usually solves both flicker and buzz.

Can you install outdoor motion lights for my driveway and backyard?

Yes. We install motion and dusk-to-dawn floodlights on garages, eaves and back walls, aiming them to cover driveways, walkways and yards without blinding the neighbors. We seal each fixture against the weather and adjust the sensor range and timing so it turns on for people and cars, not every passing branch.
